Welcome to the Red Curtain Project, a new initiative from Thresh dedicated to sharing stories, ancient and modern, from the Indian subcontinent. We believe that in challenging times stories offer timeless wisdom to bring us together and build empathy.

Every other week, we will publish a new story with guest collaborators. In sharing these stories with you, our hope is that you will be inspired to create, perform and even share your own stories with others around you.

Current series: RIVERS

This week we begin a new series of three stories about Rivers—the life source for all living beings. Combining our knowledge of their mythical origins with present day realities is an important step in future conservation towards a more positive and sustainable society.

We have chosen three rivers for our series that represent the Northern, Central and Southern landscape of modern India. Our first story is about the mighty river Ganges ("Ganga") flowing from the Himalayas into the Bay of Bengal.

We enter a world of ancient Hindu mythology: the origins of the mighty river Ganga, brought down from the heavens by the great sage Bhagiratha to cleanse the sins of his ancestors with her pure waters.

This performance is based on Read and Colour River Stories, The Story of Ganga by Priya Krishnan, illustrated by Uma Krishnaswamy, and published by Tulika. It has been adapted with original music and illustration for The Red Curtain Project.

Other stories in this series (coming soon)

The Story of Narmada

Flowing through the central part of India to reach western coast, Narmada is one of the seven holy rivers of India, created from the deep meditation of Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and regeneration.

The story of Kaveri

Said to be the "Ganga of the South", the Kaveri river flows across two states to reach the eastern coast of Southern India. All because of a spilled pot belonging to the sage Agasthya...

Here are some lovely drawings from young (and older!) creatives from around the world who took the "Red Curtain Challenge"—to send us a drawing or a painting inspired by one of the stories. A selection of our favourites is below—use the arrows to click / swipe left and right on the slideshow. Or you can see all the fantastic artwork on this page.
